How to make your own rainbow split cake face paints.

Free step by step guides from a professional face painter.

The organiser tub I am using here was from Tesco for only 97p, what a bargain!

I was painting with a large group of face painters for the Airbus’s family fun day in Bristol a while ago. While chatting to another painter I noticed that she had some pots of rainbow face paints, I asked her about them and she told me she had brought them online for about £10 each. Any way she let me have a play with them and showed me a few examples of what you can do with them.

I had a look online and came to the conclusion that they are rather expensive.  So I got creative and got all my old and unused paints out the loft and started to cut them up to make my own rainbow paints.

Step One: Select the colours that you wish to make your rainbow paint out of. Here I have chosen a selection of light and darks to make a palette to paint boys dragons from. (My how guide article will follow)

Step two: Put the desired colours in the fridge for about ten minutes so they become firm but not too long or they will become too hard to cut and reshape.

Step three: By using a sharp blade to cut and butter knife to slide/remove your strips from the old paints pots. Then reshape the old paints if you have too. Then transfer your strips into an old/empty paint mould.

Step four: Press the paints firmly into place and there you have it your own rainbow paint.

Use a large flat brush or a sponge and apply the colours using one wipe and one stroke. Experiment with application as sometimes dabbing the sponge can create a great effect and base coat.

I created the wings using a fan brush. I have cut my fan brush into the shape of a butterfly wing so all I have to do its brush my fan brush over the rainbow paints and apply the wings in one dab. Then outline and decorate with a brush.

My Halloween eye design, I made a more chunky rainbow paint with more girly colours and by using a sponge and by dabbing it lightly I have been able to create  this stunning rainbow effect base colour. This technique is also great for rainbow butterflies. See Picture of Rainbow Butterflies.
